Weak paddy prices are hurting basmati farmers. 1509 Basmati Paddy is selling at INR 2600 – INR 2750 per quintal. The main reason for fall in prices is low export demand of basmati rice.
Iran, the biggest buyer of basmati rice from India is expected to lift ban on import by January 2020. Every year Iran bans import of rice to protect its local farmers and usually lifts the ban in the month of January/February. However, reports of high production of basmati rice in Iran will likely extend the ban further affecting basmati rice exports from India
