Haryana Government: Grow Pulses and Maize instead of Paddy

Paddy Fields

The Government of Haryana will give incentives of INR 10,000 per Hectare to farmers who are part of pilot project. Regions included in pilot project include Assandh, Pundri, Narwana, Thanesar, Ambala, Radaur and Ganaur blocks.

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced this pilot project on 21st May 2019. He was cited saying, “The plan has been defined remembering the enthusiasm of ranchers and water protection. By expanding the territory of paddy into maize under this plan, the all out sparing of water is relied upon to be 0.71 crore cm (1cm = 1 lakh liters of water).”

Crop Diversification

The CM further went on the say that “Crop diversification is need of the day for the state as it saves water, electricity and crop health.

In 1970s, maize and pulses were major crops in Haryana. These yields have disappeared and are supplanted by water chugging harvests, for example, paddy and wheat.

Schemes by Haryana Government

Under the scheme, the identified farmers will be provided with seeds free of cost. Apart from this, the government will provide financial assistance of INR 2000 per acre in two parts. The maize crop insurance premium of INR 766 per hectare will be borne by the Government under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY).

Moreover, enhanced harvest obtainment by the administration organizations including HAFED, Food and Gracefully Division at Least Help Value (MSP).

Farmers Online Registration

The interested farmers need to register on the department’s portal and under this scheme, the government will provide free of cost seeds, financial assistance and crop insurance. The sole aim of this scheme is to tackle problem of depleting water table in Haryana. Water table has been receding at alarming rates recently and the Haryana Government have been concerned about water problems in the coming years. This initiative is the first step towards saving water and we hope more Governments from other states adopt similar schemes.

All things considered, there are reports stating Punjab will change into a desert all through the accompanying 25 years. Disregarding this, the Legislature of Punjab is supporting ranchers to develop more paddy in 2019. The Punjab Government should reconsider their policies and introduce crop diversification like the Haryana Government.
